battered Taiwan.

Widely planted as a shade tree,
camphor (樟樹) is grown commercially for
its medicinal oil in China and Japan.
Camphor oil, which has a strong fragrance
and feels cool on the skin like menthol,
has been used to treat ailments
ranging from diarrhea, itching to toothaches.
Camphor wood is known for
its insect repellant properties,
and its wood is often used for wardrobe.

Dozing on a park lawn,
this night heron was not bothered at all
when I tried to get closer to it
for a good picture of it.

Garcinia subelliptica (福木),
whose leaves are said to resemble
the shape and color of
an ancient Japanese coin,
is known as the fortune tree.
It has a very long life
and is easily identified from
its columnar form
with all the branches and leaves pointing upward.
Its fruit is green when unripe
and turns yellow when ripe.

Located in a quiet corner of
Taipei City’s Daan District,
Tanaka Garden
is a beautiful Tea & Coffee Shop
decorated with a mini fish pond,
some potted plants,
and some cute teddy bears,
where you can not only have a good meal
with friends or family
but also find something
to read for pleasure and relaxation:
a travel magazine
or an interesting comic book series.
It’s a very warm place, I would say.

It’s a great joy to dine
at Rainbow Terrace the Atrium
at Howard Plaza Hotel.

Located on the first floor,
this open dining space has a raised ceiling,
providing not only light and ventilation
but also views of an artificial waterfall,
a rainbow on the walls of upper floors,
and two elevators moving up and down
before your eyes.
What I like best about this place is

that you can enjoy live singing
with a dinner buffet.

National Taiwan University is
the most prestigious university in Taiwan
and has transformed into
a research university
with five international research centers
(e.g., International Center of Excellence
in Cancer Research),
seven national-level research centers
(e.g., National Center for Research
on Earthquake Engineering),
and twenty-six university-level research centers
(e.g., Center for Weather Climate
and Disaster Research).

Prized for their fragrance,
gardenias are heat-loving evergreen shrubs
with glossy, dark green foliage,
whose white flowers bloom
from mid-spring into summer.

The Azalea, a symbol of femininity
and the tenderness of first love,
is the official flower of Taipei City.
It can be seen everywhere in Taipei.
Though it is toxic when swallowed,

the Azalea is still renowned for
its beauty and charm,
which make it so attractive and popular.

Located in Shilin District,
Ming Chuan University
was Taiwan’s first women’s business school.
The founder

and the first president of the school
Dr. Teh-ming Pao
broke the myth

that women are without talent,
believing
that women, like men,
can make contributions to society
if they are provided
with opportunities for education.

Perching on a low branch
that overlooks the ecological pond
in Daan Forest Park,

a night heron peers into the water
waiting for its prey.

Passing by the pond, I could not help but stop to
watch the beautiful reflection of

the graceful willows
hanging over the water and
swaying cheerfully in the spring breeze.

Located opposite the main campus of
National Taiwan Normal University,
the NTNU Main Library is
an eight-story semi-circular building.
One thing special about the library is
the beautiful music that you would hear
if you visit the library during noon time:
it is played by a digital grand piano
placed on the first floor.

is a world-renowned medical center
for liver diseases
and has made significant contributions to
the development of medical treatment in Taiwan.
With medical techniques and quality
comparable to those in advanced countries in the West,
NTUH offers high quality and
efficient medical services to international visitors for a reasonable fee.

Imagine eating in a revolving restaurant
on top of a metropolitan incinerator!
The dining area,
rotating 360 degrees around the chimney core,
is powered by thermal energy
generated by the incinerator itself.
 From the tables,
you can view Yangmingshan National Park,
Tamsui River, and its wetlands.

Tan Tian Yuan Tea House (談天園茶坊)
is a great place to go at night, where
we can have wonderful views of
the mountains
while enjoying delicious food and
chatting with our friends.

Located next to Taipei Botanical Garden,
the National Museum of History
was originally established as
a Japanese-style building.
It was later renovated into
a building of Chinese palace styles of
the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Yuan Zai,
meaning "chubby" and "getting on well,"
is a female panda born in Taiwan
to parents Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan
by artificial insemination.

This is one of Juming’s works of Taichi Series,
into which the essence and true meaning of
martial art were incorporated.

The red flowers of
the Delonix Regia tree
catch my eye.
Then like a dream I begin to
remember those graduation blues.

Taipei Daan Post Office is a nice warm place
in our neighborhood.
We go there not just for postal
and banking services,
which are very good,
but also for free blood pressure checks.

Local people are fond of
participating in group exercise programs
in Daan Forest Park.
They say that it’s more fun exercising in a group.
More importantly, they enjoy meeting
 people in their community and
making friends with them.

In response to a global trend of
energy conservation and carbon mitigation,
the Taipei City Government,
in collaboration with Giant Taiwan,
initiated a bike sharing scheme,
known as “YouBike."

Getting something to eat
is one of the most important
things to do in the world.

Like a ballet dancer,

Constructed in 1979,
the centerpiece of Dahu Park,
the Moon Bridge,
has been voted online as the
most “mystical” bridge in the world
by boredpanda.com.
It is known for its arch structure and reflection.

Standing in the center of 228 Peace Park,
Taipei 228 monument is a memorial to
the 2-28 incident that happened in 1947.
It is hoped that people can
learn a lesson from this event.

With a handsome Chinese palace-style exterior,
the Grand Hotel is one of the
most popular landmarks in Taipei.

Hunched on the rocks are
four black-crowned night herons,
looking like old philosophers

I was touched to see how the mother bird
built the nest with
twigs, grass, straw, and mud,
then hatched her brood,
and finally fed her babies
and ate their poop
until the baby birds were fully feathered.

The red powder puff flower is
absolutely charming.
But a bee flew out and frightened me
when I touched the bloom.

An awesome view of tall palm trees
rising into the sky at dusk.

Stressed over a busy schedule? Just Relax!

“Hi, I’m Black Sugar,

Named after the former President of
National Taiwan University
Professor Ssu-nien Fu,
Fu Bell is a landmark of the
National Taiwan University campus,
and it strikes 21 times at the beginning
and end of each class period
in honor of his memory.
He famously remarked,
“There are only 21 hours a day.
The remaining three should be used for reflection.”

I love walking through this arch of trees,
which provides summer shade
and winter warmth.

When I smell the fragrance of
white jade orchid,
I know that spring has come and
summer is around!

but a giant candle in the night sky.

Like a loving couple, the willow trees are having some great heart-to-heart talks in the wind.
